Q. Who is an addict? An addict is someone whose use of mind-altering, mood changing substance causes a problem in any area of his/her life. Their whole life and thinking is centered in drugs in some form or another: the getting and using and finding ways and means to get more. Put simply, an addict is someone whose life is controlled by drugs. Likewise for alcohol, which is just another type of drug. Q. Who is eligible for admission to Recovery Home? A. Many addicts and alcoholics get so sick and tired of their self-destructive habits that they become desperate to quit, but are unable to do so on their own. They make for ideal candidates. However, there are those who resist efforts to help them come into recovery, and need to be tricked into being admitted at the clinic or escorted from home by us. In time, with a clear head and rational thinking, the merits of being drug-free dawn upon them too. Q. How long does the treatment take? A. A period of 90 days is generally recommended as the minimum time a person should undergo rehabilitation in a safe environment, sheltered from the outside world. However, if a family desires that the stay should be shorter or longer for some reason, the same could be considered, provided it’s not shorter than 30 days. Q. Can family members speak to or visit residents? A. Yes. Telephonic queries about their loved ones’ well-being and progress can be made at any time from the counselors, while a direct conversation is permissible once a week after the first fortnight. Pre-arranged visits by close family members can be made on a weekly basis after a month has elapsed. These measures are for the residents’ own benefit since any contact triggers a strong emotional response, which could be counter-productive to recovery. Family meetings are held once every month. Q. What should be done after residents are discharged from the clinic? A. It is strongly recommended that they join Alcoholics Anonymous or Narcotics Anonymous and attend recovery meetings on a daily basis. Further information about this can be obtained from the clinic.
